Philipp Spiegel

Philipp Spiegel is an Austrian photographer, writer and artist based in Barcelona and Vienna. Having started his career in photojournalism and fashion photography, his HIV diagnosis made him dedicate his work to the virus, sexuality in itself and societal stigmatisation.

His written work addresses living with HIV as a heterosexual as well as travelling with HIV and medical dependency. His new focus in writing and photography is sexuality as a whole. He has worked and been published in Germany, Argentina, USA, Spain and Austria.

In spirit of aids-activism, he is currently working on a project about sexual liberties and behavioral attitudes in times of sexual digitalization, next to which he advises and supports numerous NGOs and Aid Groups throughout Germany and Austria.

Philipp Spiegel is a pseudonym – allowing a more anonymous approach and sheltering from discrimination still widely received in his home country.

The overshadowing backdrop of my work is my human immunodeficiency virus. Commonly known as HIV. Yet it is not the topic – the topic is my transformation and the changes resulting in a life with HIV and of sexuality itself, as well as the digitalisation of sexuality.

With the rather comic working title of “The HIV Kamasutra”, the fear and stigma which society associates with the virus, with intimacy and sex contrast my own perception and experience on an everyday basis. Sexuality has become digitalised – in forms of online dating, of pornography and unrealistic perceptions in film and pornography. It has been stripped from an honest approach.

A visual, sexually overloaded society – in contrast with an emotional void, lacking intimacy.

And lacking love. All of these topics and comparisons flow into my work. My old perception versus the new, changed perception. From my own experience, my own stigma, to the dangers that my virus and me are associated with.
