At Home With Punchinello

"Shaving", Oil on panel. 20x16 in.
Reception: Friday, August 17, 7 PM
Painter and artist, Patrick Webb and the 2016 recipient of the Guggenheim Foundation award, continues to create a series of oil paintings fashioning his contemporary “Everyman” from the Punchinello who appeared as a stock figure in seventeenth century Italian commedia dell’arte. This newest series "At Home with Punchinello" includes familiar themes from his paintings as well as some departures. The interactions between Punch and his companion in the bedroom or bathroom are old friends. What differs are new concerns with atmosphere, palette and light. The crossing of warm and cool light in the compositions, along with the softening of the form, correspond to the intimacy of the emotional interactions of the figures and also the interiors themselves. In the shower paintings the space is confined and moistened by the contracted values.
