I’m a self-taught artist, and my practice has always been firmly rooted in photography. While I’ve been an artist for over 25 years, my working background has been in the construction field, carpentry, and woodworking. This led to the incorporation of sculptural elements that were used in the photographs; often standing in for the subject of the final photograph. I also incorporate ecological interventions to the work that oftentimes require long periods of planting seeds and caretaking the plants until they’re ready to be photographed. My practice runs counter to many photographers as I oftentimes plan for the timeline of making work according to the seasons as opposed to a spontaneous act of image making.
My work is deeply informed by the intersection of philosophy, theory, science, and art—an approach that allows me to view the world through a prism of possibility while questioning and unlearning harmful, outdated social structures. Science fiction has long served as a guiding framework for me, offering a vision of how we might shape the future by first imagining it. In creating fictionalized versions of the future, we take the first step toward manifesting it into reality.
Much of my photography practice involves practical or in-camera effects, where I use materials like sculpture, lighting, wires, HIV medication, and mirrors to push the boundaries of what photography is capable of and to evoke a sense of magical realism. By creating physical moments of impossibility sans digital editing, I invite viewers to consider alternative realities and expanded possibilities. My work seeks to capture the joy and wonder of existence, offering glimpses of both the present and a reimagined future.
Each piece that I make carries with it a complex Venn diagram that speaks to my lived experience and hopefully resonates with others in each of those communities. I’ve spent most of my life in a rural, southern setting as a queer man; I’m a Choctaw citizen with a deep and complicated familial history with colonization; I’m an AIDS survivor and a widower; a naturist with a deep love of the Earth and it’s natural elements; a futurist; and an unrelenting optimist with a vision for a loving and more equitable future.
