Craig Coleman worked in many mediums, oil and and acrylic paints, sculptures in wood, metal and stone and every form of paperwork and printing. Many think it morbid and irreligious--actually his work is on the contrary, intensely spiritual, while reflecting his horror at the piousness and dogma of institutional religion. In his artistic vision the sacred and profane coexist. His subject is the elemental everyman in confrontation with himself; naive, megalomaniacal and demonic. His oeuvre is populated by saints, not seen in tortured existences but instead placed in psycho-sexual contexts. His work imbues primativism but with an equally naive western view. It is raw and intrusive, drawing on some unconscious tribal references without rationalism or historicism.
