Alexander Deets

b.1984

As a self-taught artist, Alexander Deets is interested in introducing the new face of the HIV epidemic through the use of art. Influenced by the postwar abstract expressionism of the 1940s you can see the use of the materials and techniques of Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko as well as other New York School artist of that time in his work. Alexander Deets hopes that through his art people living with or affected by HIV will gain the needed visibility to end all stigma surrounding HIV.

I have asked myself the question of how can I be taken seriously as a modern artist. As I have only taken introductory level art courses in my academic career, I feel the need not only to meet expectations but to exceed them. As I discover my artistic direction, I plan to explore the basic concepts such as the figure-ground relationship with the use of one single line.
