Robert Jones
Robert Jones was born in and spent most of his life in Delaware. In 1974, he opened the Fifth Street Gallery in Wilmington, DE and orchestrated many shows there over the next four years, focussing primarily on artists from the Delaware/Philadelphia area. Regarding the New York art scene, Jones said, "Wilmington seems more of a challenge. And more than anything I would love to break the Brandywine mystique."
Near the end of his life, however, he moved to New York and completed a series of installations throughout the city and notably, on Pier 34. These installations were called Shrouds, populating well-trafficked areas and directly referencing the AIDS epidemic. Because of the public nature of the Shrouds, many of them were destroyed. This tribute page was created by Visual AIDS.
