For many years now my work has been an ongoing contemplation upon my views of life and death. Many other elements go into the conceptual makeup of the work, to be sure. Over time there have been themes in regards to my sexuality and how one becomes HIV+. There has been work that has had as its main focus censorship and the morality of the church, and in fact biblical morality is still a strong visual, and material, element that runs deep in much of the work that is am producing even today. But it all always comes back to the themes revolving around life and death, in particular my own mortality. For a long time my main concept was the demise of life due to AIDs. But as medications and life expectancies have improved, and seeing that I do not live in a vacuum, my thoughts and work have turned increasingly towards the nuclear issue. This has allowed me much more artistic freedom visually. Work can be very simple and graphic, as with my series of line drawings, or it can visually be quite decorative, as with the Storax and Mandrel series. But even though my use of nuclear imagery and subject matter exists as visual reference to our external world at large, on a personal level the use of nuclear images is, and has always been, synonymous with the aids epidemic. It is both visually and conceptually a symbiotic and exchangeable relationship in both my mind, and my work.
