Joe Incao

I am a contemporary sculptor based in New York City. My work is recognized for its raw and provocative forms and textural abstractions. Through my pieces, I convey the harmony achieved when contrasting shapes, materials, and ideas intersect.

I use wood that has been cut and assembled with wood glue, screws, wood filler and primer. Afterward construction adhesive is applied using a putty knife which forces the adhesive to extrude past its borders, creating a rhythm of shapes that contrast against the other elements in the piece. Several layers of paint are applied to further highlight the organic details I have created. 

All my life I have used art to navigate through challenges; whether as a child not fitting into family expectations or in my early adulthood learning how to cope with fear and grief during the AIDS epidemic or later on in life finding myself alone and starting over. Art has always been a safety net, a shelter from that which could easily be overwhelming. 

I love my work and the direction it is taking. For me, I would hope that you find a piece that resonates with you. That it pauses you in a world of constant noise, that it allows you to sit with yourself for a moment and see what it evokes.
