Oscar Contreras is a Mexican-born visual artist, writer, and actor from Rio Verde, San Luis Potosí.
A self-taught multidisciplinary artist, he centers his practice in painting, using figuration, bold color, and surreal elements to explore identity, desire, masculinity, resilience, and the complexities of human experience.
His work also extends into cartonería and other handmade forms that create texture, transformation, and storytelling.
Contreras has worked as an actor since 2001, with numerous television, on-camera, commercial, voiceover, and theatre credits. Performance and visual intersect in his practice, both grounded in presence, narrative, and emotional truth.
His Mexican heritage remains central to his work. Colors, symbolism, and emotional depth draw from cultural memory, immigration, and belonging...bridging past and present while honoring the richness of cultural diversity.
Through painting, writing, and creation, Contreras transforms personal history into visual storytelling, giving form to experiences that often remain unseen yet deeply felt.
Oscar Contreras lives and works in Dallas, Texas
I am an artist working primarily as a painter. My work lives in vivid storytelling, religion, and surreal imagery. Currently residing in Dallas, I was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, a place that fed my young imagination with folklore, religion, and ideas of love. My art centers on figuration, emotional and psychological thresholds, invoking intimacy, desire, and suspended moments. The charged pause before touch, the vulnerability of a quiet moment, the gravity of devotion. These are the moments that alter us.
