I have been in the creative sandbox my entire life starting when I was the only juvenile with a speaking role in the 1976 Bicentennial Roadshow. As a young boy, struggling with my identity and helping to care for my brother with Down Syndrome, music, theatre and poetry not only gave me an escape, but also great joy and hope. I have tried, within my career as an artist, to nurture and facilitate that joy and hope within myself and others. As a writer, most of my works have challenged the stereotypes associated with minority communities and also celebrated stories of those who live with physical or developmental disabilities. My most recent works, as both a playwright and filmmaker, have allowed me to explore relationships, creativity, identity, heroism and "otherness" in a challenging world. My short play, Remembering When I Used to Remember, centers around a gay married couple as they prepare to renew their vows at the beach in Provincetown. A secret that involves their home care aid challenges the norms and parameters of marriage and relationship and as memories are lost and found, the play reveals itself as a humorous and heartwarming story of love’s endurance in the face of dementia, time and imperfection. My short documentary film, Artists at the Edge, has been described this way, by QFest St. Louis: "Two fearless queer artists defy the odds and create with unapologetic passion. Set against the backdrop of a divided society, this powerful film invites you into the lives of Kenny Lockwood and Darlene Van Alstyne - artists who came achingly close to fame, yet never stopped making bold, beautiful work. Brimming with creativity and urgency, this is more than a portrait - it's a call to action, a celebrations of freedom, and a tribute to art's power to endure."
