Chloe Dzubilo DUETS Book Club
Bluestockings, NYC
The importance of community and dialogue are at the heart of Visual AIDS' DUETS publication series. In hopes of bringing together the extended Visual AIDS community of artist members, advocates, and affiliates around our latest publications, Visual AIDS hosted a book club for DUETS: Che Gossett & Alice O'Malley in Conversation on Chloe Dzubilo. The second volume of DUETS considered themes such as long-term survival with AIDS, trans activism, and spirituality. We discussed these topics as well as insights, inspirations and reactions to the engaging and highly readable DUETS conversation, which highlighted connections between communities of artists and activists. We encourage book club participants to have read DUETS, yet all are welcome to participate in the discussion.
Chloe Dzubilo (1960-2011) was an artist, performer, and activist - advocating for civil rights, adequate health care and dignity for people living with HIV/AIDS, transgender people.
~~~~~
"Chloe's art isn't about isolated genius, it's about being part of a community... We need to continually invoke her voice and spirit. You think I mean this metaphorically, but I mean it literally. Read her words, look at her art, talk to her, and you'll get an answer if you listen. Then make up your own language to speak the unspeakable about being a person with AIDS or trans or abuse survivor and never shut up."
DUETS books are available in New York City at Bluestockings, Bureau of General Services Queer Division, Printed Matter and the New Museum.
They are also available on Visual AIDS' website and in our office (526 West 26th Street #510).
DUETS is a series of publications that pairs artists, activists, writers, and thinkers in dialogues about their creative practices and current social issues around HIV/AIDS. Drawing from the Visual AIDS Artist Registry and Archive Project, this series continues Visual AIDS’ mission to support, promote, and honor the work of artists with HIV/AIDS and the artistic contributions of the AIDS movement.
