¡Felicidades Carmen!: A Celebration of Carmen Herrera on ZOOM
El Museo Del Barrio
On the occasion of the Carmen Herrera’s 105th birthday, El Museo del Barrio is delighted to host a conversation in honor of the life and career of artist Carmen Herrera. A resident of New York City since the 1950s, the Cuban-born Herrera is recognized as a pioneering figure in the field of geometric abstraction. This special celebration gathers friends, artist-colleagues, and curators to reflect on Herrera’s legacy, as well as her relationship with El Museo del Barrio, which hosted her first major solo museum exhibition in 1998.
The discussion, moderated by Susanna Temkin, Curator, El Museo del Barrio, will feature Tony Bechara, artist and long-time friend of Herrera’s; Carolina Ponce de Leon, independent curator who formerly worked at El Museo del Barrio where she organized the exhibition ‘Carmen Herrera: The Black and White Paintings, 1951-1989’ in 1998; and Monica Espinel, independent curator and author of the chronology for Herrera: Lines of Sight for the 2016-2017 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art
