Luis Carle: Gay in the USA: LGBTQ Communities of NY 1989-mid 90’s exhibition
The LGBT Center NYC
The new artwork at The Center was created in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. It is a visual protest of the treatment of LGBTQ people that continues today, echoing the rage and urgency that catalyzed the Stonewall Riots and flows through the broader LGBTQ rights movement in the United States.
This also marks the opening of Artist Member Luis Carle’s “Gay in the USA: LGBTQ Communities of NY 1989-mid 90’s.” The exhibit looks at the people, the power and movement of NYC that celebrated queer visibility/rights in the midst of the ongoing AIDS crisis. Through portraits of friends, photographs of the marches and of the social landscapes created by LGBTQ folk, we get a glimpse of a history that continues to shape our communities.
Alongside Carle’s photographs we will take a look back at the 1989 Center Show, a show conceived by curators Rick Barnett and Barbara Sahlman where 50 artists were invited to mark the walls of The Center with artwork. Some murals still grace our walls, and this exhibit will feature a select grouping of artists in the original show as well as take an archival and artistic look at 1989’s Center Show that continues to inspire.
Opening reception on Monday, June 3, 6-9PM
