What if having a virus sent you to prison? There have been hundreds of HIV criminalization prosecutions across the U.S. and Canada. Does HIV make you a criminal? Could it? What would you do? What can you do?
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS presented two powerful documentaries tackling HIV criminalization: Positive Women: Exposing Injustice, a feature-length film produced by the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network; and HIV is Not a Crime, a short produced by the Sero Project.
There was a Q&A and panel discussion followed after the screening.Panelists included Richard Elliott, executive director of the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network; Jessica Whitbread, global chair of the International Community of Women Living with HIV (featured in Positive Women: Exposing Injustice); and Robert Suttle, assistant director of the Sero Project (seen in HIV Is Not a Crime).The panel will be moderated by Sean Strub, executive director of the Sero Project.
