Visual AIDS, along with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, sponsors a panel discussion "Seeing Red: The Red Ribbon (Pro or Con?)".

From NYTimes article "EGOS & IDS; Red Ribbons Are Turning Black and Blue" May 23, 1993:

"We're very proud of the ribbon project, but if there's a debate, let's get in there and wrestle with it," said Patrick O'Connell, the director of Visual AIDS. "We have some serious questions when people say that people wearing ribbons are hypocrites. It's unfair to say they are doing nothing more than donning a fashion accessory. The ribbon project helped to reframe public discourse. It certainly brought talking about AIDS suddenly up front."
