Smith’s point is that there is something different about the way HIV-AIDS is now represented, and by whom it is represented. For many reasons, the present contingent of works by Singaporean, Filipino, Chinese and Ukranian artists would have been impossible in 1994, or unlikely - a geo-political shift.

Another of the show’s premises is that the new art of HIV-AIDS is an art of incompleteness, anatomical and social. For that reason, many of the exhibits in With and Without You focus on fragments - fragments of bodies, of narratives, of histories - while rarely is such a thing as a whole entity made the subject of a work, a “thing entire”.
