Wu Ingrid Tsang, Conception

Conception (cards / 2009) - Wu Ingrid Tsang

"Conception" presents media headlines from June through November 1981; the moment just before AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) officially entered language. It is part of an ongoing project that considers the AIDS crisis, as a social event and as an art movement, from my position as an artist born in 1982. AIDS, as a word, disease and cultural phenomena, came into focus in parallel with the formation of my generation of queer political artists.

Wu Ingrid Tsang is a Los Angeles-based artist and organizer, who works primarily with the 'voice' as a physical medium and metaphor in photography, installation, performance, and film. Since 2008, he co-runs the weekly performance series Wildness, and the collective space Imprenta. He also performs as Marriage, a multi-media collaboration founded with Math Bass in 2005. Performances include REDCAT and LACE (Los Angeles), The Kitchen, La Mama, and Art in General (New York), Espai d'Art Contemporani (Castellon), Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (Berlin), and the Sala de Art Publico Siqueiros (Mexico City). Screenings include the Oberhausen (GER), Impakt Festival (Netherlands), Liverpool Biennial (UK), the National Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow), TVTV (Copenhagen), and the Städtische Galerie Kunsthaus (Dresden).
