Carlos Cordero

b.1975

Carlos Cordero was born in the Dominican Republic and relocated to the United States and to New York City with his parents at age ten. He lived in the Bronx, and first studied art as a High School student at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Which lead him to further to study art at SUNY Purchase, where he discovered printmaking.

Cordero studied under one of the greatest influences of his work, Master printmaker Antonio Frasconi while at SUNY Purchase. Frasconi introduced Carlos to the dying art of hand carved wood cutting, and this is where Carlos found one of his artistic niches. After two years of study at SUNY Purchase, Carlos completed his BFA in printmaking at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY

Carlos’s work has an unrestrained presence. To him printmaking is a give and take process. He gives in the way of improvising the carving, and then takes by creating a dialog with the figures and images that appear before him. Cordero’s process owes much to the Surrealist and the aspect of automatism. Yet his own work unfolds with a fundamental personality of its own. This is achieved by introducing his own memories of childhood, through street art and fantasy. Cordero’s work reveals his individual perspective deeply grounded in the history of art, religion, and the Freudian interpretation of dreams.

Carlos has exhibited works at the Roberto Clemente Cultural Center Latino Artists Exhibition as a featured artist in the Borimix Annual Urban Art Exhibition and group show. He exhibited original artwork for the Organization of Puerto Rican Artists (OP Arts) silent fundraiser and participated in the annual Halloween Art Exhibition and Fundraiser event.

Carlos also contributed works to the Isabella’s Gift Foundation Silent Auction Fundraiser and Art Exhibition Event in San Diego California in2008 and 2009. Carlos also assisted with coordinating the arrangement of paintings for exhibit and designed the lighting schemes for all displays.

In 2008 and 2009 Carlos participated in two artist group shows whose theme was focused on the interpretation of the New Jersey Meadowland Marshes and Wetlands at the Secaucus, New Jersey Public Library Annual Art Exhibition

Carlos now lives and works in his studio in Coney Island, NY.

Carlos Cordero's prints have an unrestrained presence. To him printmaking and more precisely his relief prints, are a process of give and take . It takes by improvising on the carved surface but it gives by creating a dialog with the images that appears before you . His process owes much to the surreal, yet unfolds with a fundamental personality of it's own.
