Darryl DeAngelo Terrell (b:1991) is a queer african-american artist whose primary practice is photography. Currently based in Chicago, IL darryl is a mfa graduate student majoring in photography at the school of the art institute of chicago. Darryl’s work deals with body image, black masculinity, queer identity, and the black family structure. Pulling from influences he observed growing up on the eastside of Detroit, Michigan, Darryls work is also a reflection of popular culture traversed through media such as music, movies, and other similarly related sources.
What is American Blackness? How does it look? These questions came to mind while reading Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me as well as James Baldwin’s Fire Next Time. I have started to think about the Black, femme, and queer body as one and separate entities, and how they occupy and demand space in the American landscape.
These ideas are being fleshed out through photography, video, performance, and print media. Each medium has allowed me to explore the complex conversation between desire politics, Black male masculinity, the Black family structure, racial injustice and queer identity.
There are many platforms that influence and inspire my work. I grasp onto ideas from social media, television, music, literature, my environment, my past, and artists such as Kalup Linzy, Carrie Mae Weems, Xaviera Simmons, and Glenn Ligon.
