Larry Eades

Through photography, painting, and patchwork quilting, Larry Eades (b. 1953, Tarrytown, NY) captures the fragmentary quality of human attention. Eades studied at the Art Institute of Boston and later returned to artistic practice after participating in the “Straight from the Heart” Art Program, organized by Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).

Frequently focusing on architectures—from urban infrastructures in New York City to suburban homes in the Hudson Valley—his photographs collage sequential exposures of the same subject. Rather than invoking the format of panorama, the assembled images repeat the same features at progressive levels of zoom, suggesting the itineraries of the lingering gaze. In these multiframe works, the camera’s eye becomes an index for the passage of time and place. Eades’s quilts reproduce a parallel assemblage within the gridded rigor of the patchwork medium. Playing upon the optical experience of composition and color, the textile works juxtapose patterned sequences, drawing parallels between the ordered logics of plaid and polka dots, paisley and faux wood grain.

In recent years, Eades has turned increasingly to the medium of paint to capture impressions of his environment and the fleetingness of natural beauty. While occasionally returning to architectural tableaux, his oil paint compositions more frequently celebrate the evanescent beauty of sunsets, flora, and bodies of water.
