Michael Harwood

b.1946

Born and based in New York City, Michael Harwood has been an exhibiting artist since the 1970s. His satiric, semi-pornographic collages were shown at Group Material in 1981. His youthful involvement with photography was revived when a hunky muse inspired him to start shooting again and to make his first photos of naked men.. For this work, Harwood has developed a signature style, based on concepts and practices he absorbed in his 20s, while training for a life in the theater. Like theater, his photography operates in the slippery zone where art and life converge - whether in the studio or out in the world. Beyond the scope of photographic processes, Harwood creates diptychs, in which new meanings and pictorial complexities arise from the juxtaposition of two compatible images.
