Visual AIDS is saddened to learn of the passing of Artist+ Member Joseph Modica (1946–2018). Modica's practice consisted primarily of photography and drawing, documenting the club scene of the 1980s and exploring the male nude. His work was published in publications such as the New York Native, Christopher Street, Mandate, Honcho, Playguy, and In Touch.

Modica's photographs were also featured in Party Out of Bounds: Nightlife as Activism Since 1980, curated by Emily Colucci and Osman Can Yerebakan for Visual AIDS in 2015. In addition to being an Artist+ Member, Modica volunteered with Visual AIDS for many years and was a great supporter of the organization.

Modica's close friend Bridget Galway reflects: "Joseph's friendship enriched my life in so many ways. All the aspects of his nature were an integral part of my evolution as a human being, which I continue to express through my art and writing. Talks with Joseph were full of everything. His wonderful humor, which was often times sardonic, gave way to the comic relief we so sorely need, given the times we live in."

Bridget published a short biography written by Joseph along with a gallery of his work in The Wilderness House Literary Review in 2010, available online here.

Modica's artwork can be viewed on his Registry page here.
