Pride can be a wonderful and stressful time. Frivolity, flesh, risk, fun, trauma, memories, history and sunshine/burn. For the second year in a row, Visual AIDS provides you with listings so you can create your own Alternative Pride Weekend. Do what you need to do to be out, social engaged, but not overly overwhelmed, triggered, policed or annoyed. For inspiration this year we look to artist member Paul Thek and his piece: "Afflict the comfortable, comfort the afflicted". The following suggestions are about bringing community together, questioning the current state of PRIDE and making space for people to still celebrate and gather.
WHO THRIVES? WHO DIES?
Online, BGSQD, and soon, everywhere
83a Hester Street, NYC
Free
Start your weekend off by asking the important questions. The the second Flash Collective, convened by The Helix Queer Performance Network, mentored by Avram Finkelstein, has created a website and sticker that lays out queries many of us have:
Who Thrives? Who Dies?
Whose Bodies Matter?
Whose History Survives?
Who Gets Policed?
Who is Safe?
Who is Missing?

They mockingly invite people to “get arrested” and enjoy “Solitary confinement, showers, jailbreak, love and lust, freedom and confinement” at their “Prison of Love” Pride 2014 party. Join GAY SHAME and LAGAI - Queer Insurrection as they march to the party to abolish prisons.

OUT IN THE WOODS LGBT HOMELESS YOUTH SUMMER CAMP 2014.
Anytime before July 4
Online
Don't feel like leaving the house? But have a few extra dollars? Support OUT IN THE WOODS. Nestled in the rolling hills of upstate New York, Arts in The Woods is a summer arts retreat designed to empower young queer artists and build an intergenerational community of visual artists, musicians, dancers, writers and performers. From Sunday July 13th to Friday July 18th, young people ages 18-24 who have survived NYC and Boston's queer youth shelters will attend a collective arts residency at Easton Mountain Retreat Center and be nurtured by more established queer artists and performers. Arts in the Woods creates space for all participants to heal together from the misogyny, transphobia, racism, inadequate housing, and economic injustice so pervasive in our cities. The beautiful land at Easton Mountain offers artistic inspiration and a perfect backdrop for creativity. They need help to make it a reality.
