QUEEROCRACY, the activist organization that cultivates the leadership of queer folks and people living with HIV/AIDS in NYC, will now be meeting at the Bureau for General Services-Queer Division (BGSQD). Part bookstore, part community space, BGSQD is a perfect gathering space for those involved, or wanting to get involved in HIV/AIDS activism. It is rich with fascinating people who frequent the store, and shelved full of inspiration and information.
The first QUEEROCRACY meeting at BGSQD (83A Hester Street) is on October 24th, from 7 to 9pm and will be lead by SERO Project's Robert Suttle, focusing on HIV Criminalization.
QUEEROCRACY gatherings are rooted in active learning, knowledge sharing and skill building. Creative and interactive, the meetings invite people to get involved as "they feel comfortable and capable."
About Robert Suttle:
Prior to joining Sero in March, 2012, Suttle was a case manager and prevention specialist at the Philadelphia Center, in Shreveport, Louisiana, working with young African American men who have sex with men. Robert was released from a Louisiana prison in January, 2011, after accepting a plea bargain and serving six months for a conviction under Louisiana’s so-called “Intentional Exposure to AIDS Virus” statute. Suttle was prosecuted after he and a former partner, with whom he had a contentious relationship, stopped seeing each other. The partner, who had previously threatened to file charges against Suttle, then went to the police and did so.
