Bodies of Resistance: Hartford, CT
REAL ART WAYS, CT
Bodies of Resistance, curated by Barbara Hunt, a group show of 17 international artists all addressing issues of the body and disease in contemporary society, opened on December 1, 1999 at Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT, then travels to Durban, South Africa for the International World AIDS Conference in 2000.
Bodies of Resistance presents emerging and established artists whose work and artistic practices has been influenced by HIV/AIDS. The exhibition encourages a reconsideration of representations of the body in light of the global spread of AIDS, as well as comparisons between developments in technology, science, and medical research. In the U.S., in particular, there is an established history of artists creating issue-based work which draws public attention to matters which are overlooked in the media or ignored politically. This exhibition follows within that tradition, showing significant work which considers the ongoing impact of HIV/AIDS and its implications for the twenty-first century.
