Gym Paintings by Patrick Webb
Visual AIDS Patrick Webb's "Gym Paintings 1996-2001" opens at Jadite Gallery on November 19.
"These paintings are chosen from a body of work completed in the late 1990s. In them Punchinello, my other other, jumps into the formidable activity of the work-out gym. The fractured compositions that separate, repeat and coalesce are equally a part of the meaning and the narrative, as are the locations and the activities of Punchinello and others. My work aims to employ all elements of painting to present a state of being. In the later 1990s I was rebuilding, having survived the darkest moments of the epidemic, struggling to be. Jonathan weinberg in his essay on the first exhibition of these paintings titled Punchinello Works Out wrote the initals PWO echo PWA (Person WITH AIDS) and POW (Prisoner of War). I like the observation but would add that for me it is surviving and regeneration after over a decade of misery that is central to the paintings-- the delight of a man's anatomy taken at a glance--gluteus, deltoid, soleus, all within the context of rebuilding."- Patrick Webb
