Visual AIDS Artist Member Patrick Webb will present "Punchinello in Crisis," a series of paintings, of which 6 out of 13 are included in the exhibition, depict Punchinello being raised or lowered into a manhole by other Punchinelli. They ostensibly continue my exploration of the experience of the HIV epidemic. However, there are additional things going on. Pictorially they are complex. The picture plane is located well into the activity, thereby dragging the viewer into the arabesques of space. The encircling figures ignoring the drama of succor constitute a chorus of rejection. The Cuban writer Arenas said the hardest thing about America is that instead of attacking outside voices we just ignore them. I suggest with these paintings that we are all living suffering ignored.
