In support of the New York Public Library's exhibition, Why We Fight:Remembering AIDS Activism, Visual AIDS has organized an interactive series which uses art-making to connect young adults with vital information about HIV while exploring the history of AIDS Activism.
All programs begin at 3:30pm.
No previous art experience is required.
All materials will be provided (unless otherwise noted).
Hands-on Journey: Activism and Awareness with Visual AIDS Artist Eric Rhein
October 10 at Columbus Library, 742 10th Ave, NY
Eric Rhein’s artistic practice is about remembering, surviving and fighting back. In this workshop Rhein will share his work and lead students on a journey in seeing the natural world as a source of strength, and a means to know their best self, resulting in the creation of a drawn self-portrait.
Eric Rhein childhood was spent between Hudson New York and Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. Rhein attended the School of Visual Arts in New York for both his undergraduate and his MFA on full scholarship. His work has been exhibited widely, including Sculpture Center, White Columns, Artists Space, Art in General.
Seeing AIDS: A writing workshop for emerging artists and critics with Visual AIDS

Since the dawn of the AIDS crisis, artists and critics have been crucial for healing, fighting, educating, and witnessing. In this workshop, Visual AIDS program manager Ted Kerr will lead students through a series of exercises inviting them to see the world through the lens of AIDS and art.
Canadian born Ted Kerr is a New York based writer and artist. He is the Visual AIDS program manager and graduated from the New School’s Writing and Democracy Program.
What’s Your Story? – A Collage Making Workshop with Visual AIDS Artist Member John Hanning
November 7 at Baychester, 2049 Asch Loop North (north of Bartow Ave.), Bronx, NY
From growing up in the South, to coming of age in 1980s New York, to coming to terms with his health and family, artist John Hanning uses collage to tell his stories. In the workshop Hanning will share his art, and teach others how they can use to collage to share their stories.
John Hanning was born in 1961 in Arkansas. He attended Memphis College of Art, Parsons, Fashion Institute of Technology. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
Simple Message Art – A workshop on alternative sculpture with Visual AIDS Artist Member Curtis Carman
November 21at High Bridge, 78 West 168th Street (at Woodycrest Ave.), Bronx, NY
In the age of virtual information overload, nothing can be as powerful as the physical and the simple. In this workshop, artist Curtis Carmen will talk about his practice of visual art, performance and alternative sculpture as a means to share with others how they can tell big stories, using very little. Students will be guided in making their own sculpture using found materials.
Curtis Carman received his MFA in sculpture from Hunter College, CUNY. In addition to his own performance work, he has also appeared with Karen Finley, Michael Mahalchick, and Zachary Fabri. Carman’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally, including La Mama Gallery, General Public in Berlin, and Documenta XII
