"Patriot" snakes up a 130 step public staircase on West 187th street, to the highest part of Manhattan. After an arduous climb, one gets a stunning view of the Hudson river and the New Jersey skyline. With Historic Fort Washington only a block away, Taylor's enormous mural resembling a red and blue ribbon honors the 2,838 American soldiers captured with Fort Washington by the English and left to die on British prison ships. "Patriot" is part of Steed Taylor's "road tattoo" series. Artwork painted on the street as a means of commemoration or as part of a ritual is akin to tattooing one's skin for the same reasons.
