Fugitive, or From here to there and back again
As I looked through the Archive, I found myself discarding the possible conceptual envelopes I had come in with. Instead, I started with the simple premise of work that I was drawn to and wanted to see more of. I found myself interested in work that revels in its own literalness (Gonzalez-Torres' candy, Reed's poodles), work that toggles back and forth between things being just what they look like and things being something else entirely. The thread that runs through all of the work is along the lines of alchemy -- processes of transformation, transfiguration and transmutation -- ranging from the layerings of Tseng Kwong Chi's insertion of a fictive representation of himself into pop iconic myths, to Tony Feher's use of everyday objects turned into integers of a post-minimalist matrix.
